True to Kataragama’s renown as a multi-faith religious centre, Islamic Kathirkamam draws thousands of Muslim pilgrims who go annually to visit the mosque and shrine.
The mosque at Kataragama contains the shrine of Hazarat Al-Khizr (Al-Khidr), the ‘Green One’. The mosque and shrine are situated in an enclosed area on the right side of the Valli Amma Devalaya. While it is difficult to establish precise dates for when this mosque was built, British colonial records note that vast numbers of Mohammedans of the surrounding village of Hambantota came to Kataragama in search of a secret subterranean spring, the waters of which, if drunk, are said to endow a person with the blessings of perpetual immortality.
