The Kataragama Bo tree is believed to be one of the eight saplings that emerged from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, planted in the 3rd century BC during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa by the Kshatriyas of Kataragama. The temple that was built alongside this bo tree is known as the Kiri Vehera.
