Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya Fund initiatives – Social welfare
● Construction of a children’s ward complex at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital ● Conducting a free Korean language course as a solution to the prevailing issue of unemployment in the Kataragama area and to facilitate the earning of foreign exchange ● Housing project for low-income earners in the Kataragama area ● Repairing the homes of the service women (Aalaththi Amma) who work for the Kataragama Devalaya and providing for their needs ● Preparation of a ward for Buddhist clergy at the Hambantota District Hospital ● Removal of the dilapidated main bus station and construction of a new bus station with upgraded facilities ● Assisting local temples ● Distribution of dry rations during the Covid-19 pandemic ● Establishing the city’s lighting system ● Lending assistance to complete the construction of market stalls belonging to the Urban Development Authority ● Initiation of a computer lab for children from impoverished families in the area ● Providing midday meals for Dhamma School students ● Providing school books for all schools in the area ● Commencement of housing project for low-income earners in the area ● Construction of a new children’s home in Kataragama ● Provision of a new rest area for pilgrims beside the devalaya ● Reconstruction of the collapsed wall at the Kataragama National School ● Conducting workshops for area school teachers and the business community ● Providing hospitality to foreign tourists arriving at the sacred site and implementing programmes to promote the city of Kataragama among foreigners ● Swift renovation of the roads of the Nagaha Veediya village together with the Road Development Authority ● Implementation of a new bus service to Gothamigama – a remote village in the Kataragama area – and provision of free season tickets to all school students using the service courtesy of the Kataragama Devalaya ● Provision of dry rations to impoverished families in the area during the Covid-19 pandemic ● Provision of food to families displaced by floods ● Cleaning of the city being undertaken by the devalaya during the Esala Perahera season
