Drawing inspiration from the generosity of visitors to Kataragama and the benevolence of the God Kataragama, the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya is directing the temple’s funds, donated as tribute by its numerous devotees, toward the construction of a fully-equipped four-storey building to be used as the children’s ward for the Apeksha Hospital.

The Maharagama Apeksha Hospital (also known as the National Cancer Institute), a teaching hospital managed under the Ministry of Health, is dedicated to diagnosing and treating cancer patients in Sri Lanka.

The foundation stone for the new building was laid in September 2023, ensuring a construction timeline of seven months.

With a cost estimate of Rs. 150,000,000 to cover construction expenses, the new building is expected to facilitate space to treat paediatric cancer patients for a period of almost 20 years. Not only will the building be capable of housing around 120 children, patients will also have individual cubicles and a separate bed for their caregivers, ensuring a holistic solution to the prevailing space constraints at the hospital, where four patients and their their caregivers shared one 12″x10″ room.

Replete with modern facilities such as a space for their caregivers to prepare meals for the children, a computer lab, library, play area, and laundry area, the children’s cancer ward will be a home away from home for paediatric cancer patients and their guardians.

With the objective of ensuring full transparency of funds channelled toward the Apeksha Hospital project, donors can track all financial transactions undertaken in bringing the project to fruition.
